About
Sarah Marks is an American-born painter and artist. Born in Missouri into a military family in the heart of the United States of America, Sarah grew up surrounded by the contemporary issues of rural communities, as well as being Asian-American in a heavily white and conservative community. She paints to bridge the gap between being an ideal American-born citizen, while still facing issues of being othered by “truer” Americans. She lives and works out of Chicago, IL.
Artist Statement:
My art describes the space between being alive and feeling alive. This disconnect is present in my everyday life as time passes and memories form, but I don’t feel present in those moments until after the events have happened. As someone who struggles with depression and feeling disconnected from who I am/was/will be, my work is a meditation on these events I’ve forgotten detailing how I remember the moment. Most of my compositions are flat and lifeless, despite them featuring people I know intimately. In the way we attribute human-qualities to inanimate objects, personifying them, I attribute object-like qualities with the people in my paintings.
